What makes a redaction safe?
Is FreeRedact free to use?
Yes. You can redact supported screenshots, images, and PDFs without an account or paid download step. Advertising on the public page helps keep the editor free.
Does FreeRedact upload my file?
No. The editor opens and processes your file locally in your browser. The separate public page can show information and ads, but it does not receive the document, detected text, or redactions.
Can blurred or pixelated text be recovered?
Blur and pixelation alter appearance without guaranteeing that the information is gone. FreeRedact uses solid redactions and creates a flattened output so the original page content is not kept underneath.
Can automatic detection miss something?
Yes. OCR and detection can miss handwriting, unusual layouts, low-quality scans, or unfamiliar identifiers. Review every page and add manual redactions before exporting.
